How Stamhuis Upgraded Their B2B Marketplace with OroCommerce

The Challenge
The journey began when Stamhuis had to confront a series of challenges. They had been using Magento 1 for their marketplace since 2011, but by 2018-2019, it became clear that Magento 1 was no longer supported. Concurrently, their ERP system also reached its “end-of-life,” prompting the need for a replacement.
By September 2020, Stamhuis had implemented their new ERP system successfully. The next step was to choose a suitable ecommerce platform, and OroCommerce emerged as the top choice. Their decision was based on several key factors, including OroCommerce’s B2B focus, approval workflows, and a built-in marketplace solution.
The most formidable challenge emerged during the marketplace buildout. Stamhuis’s marketplace primarily served customers in the Netherlands and Belgium, ranging from diverse retailers with varying sizes and product assortments. Each order had to undergo approval at headquarters before fulfillment, and their extensive catalog of over 2,000 items needed efficient organization into categories for easy access.
To address this complexity, Stamhuis also needed to integrate their ERP system to seamlessly import and export customer and product information.

The Solution
Stamhuis’s transition to OroCommerce proved to be the solution to their multifaceted challenges. OroCommerce provided Stamhuis with the B2B-focused platform they needed. Importantly, it offered a compelling advantage: the ability to function with minimal customizations.
The approval workflow, which was a pivotal challenge for Stamhuis, was notably easy to build and manage within OroCommerce. This reduced the need for complex customizations and sped up the implementation process. Stamhuis no longer had to rely on external partners for intricate adjustments, as OroCommerce’s native features seamlessly aligned with their requirements.

Additionally, Stamhuis integrated a feature in the backend to connect products with specific shop types, ensuring a tailored shopping experience for each customer.
The integration of their ERP system was another crucial puzzle piece, enabling seamless imports of customer and product data. After the order and approval process from headquarters, OroCommerce exported the data back to the ERP system. This real-time information loop ensured that retail employees always stayed informed on their order statuses and past orders.
Thanks to OroCommerce, Stamhuis achieved the following results:
- Eliminated outdated Magento 1, ensuring a secure up-to-date platform.
- Launched a B2B marketplace with minimal customizations for faster time to market.
- Configured OroCommerce in-house without relying on external partners.
- Leveraged native OroCommerce features, reducing the need for complex customizations.
- Significantly enhanced customer satisfaction with a modern, buyer-focused marketplace.
Ultimately, OroCommerce’s out-of-the-box flexibility allowed Stamhuis to scale their marketplace, meeting the unique needs of their diverse customer base. Stamhuis’s transition to OroCommerce not only resolved their immediate challenges but also positioned them for future growth and success.
