In our last \u00a0Training Thursday, we showed you how to use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/blog\/training-thursday-utilizing-tiered-price-lists-managing-orocommerce\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiered B2B price lists and manage them in OroCommerce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Today we\u2019ll take a closer look at pricing strategies and dig deeper into product assignment and price calculation rules. These are the features you use to filter products for price lists and set price calculation rules for items based on various product details. Before we start, let\u2019s take a quick look at pricing strategies that support a healthy profit margin and sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Pricing to Balance Profit Margin and Sales <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charging one price for your product is almost always a bad B2B business practice. Yet companies that dedicate resources to reducing costs or selling more product don\u2019t seem to invest in exploring their pricing. That\u2019s a mistake. Yes, balancing profit margin on one side with prices that generate sales on the other is a \u00a0challenge. But the reward is greater. Then, the salesforce is authorized to use negotiation to reach the desired price points. Sales reps assess the perceived value to the customer to determine the price they are willing to pay and then factor in volume and frequency of purchases. For example, in computer hardware and software purchases, the asking price may not be a deciding factor. Customers may place a higher value on integration and support and be willing to pay a premium for them. Manufacturers that purchase raw goods may place a higher value on consistent availability and quality than price. Wholesalers know that their retailers may settle for less margin if wholesalers are willing to dropship and absorb some of the cost of sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, effective B2B pricing is complex and requires the ability to customize prices. OroCommerce provides you the tools to create price lists and set pricing rules so you deliver the right price to your customer. Here\u2019s how.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Assignment and Price Calculation Rules In OroCommerce<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OroCommerce <\/span><b>product assignment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> option available on the Create Price List form filters a product or group of products into a new price list. <\/span><b>Price calculation rules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then specify conditions and expressions to calculate new prices to be applied to the list of products. For example, to create an exclusive sale, \u00a0just filter products from the default catalog and use their base prices to offer a 25% discount on these products. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To display these prices on the storefront, assign the price list to the customer\u2019s account. The buyer will now have the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/marketing-and-sales\/our-insights\/do-you-really-understand-how-your-business-customers-buy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customized purchasing experience research shows they want<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0To learn more about creating and managing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/blog\/training-thursday-utilizing-tiered-price-lists-managing-orocommerce\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiered price lists in OroCommerce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, check out our this previous\u00a0Training Thursday edition or watch the complete<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/media-library\/create-and-manage-price-lists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, once you\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/doc\/orocommerce\/current\/user-guide\/pricing\/#create-a-price-list\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created a new price list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and provided all necessary data such as name, currencies, or activation schedule; go to the <\/span><b>Product Assignment section<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the form. In the <\/span><b>Rule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box, specify the products in the price list to which the calculation rules should apply. \u00a0You can do this either by typing in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/doc\/orocommerce\/current\/user-guide\/pricing\/#filtering-expression-syntax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/doc\/orocommerce\/current\/user-guide\/pricing\/pricelist\/autocomplete\/#user-guide-pricing-price-list-auto-autocomplete\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autocomplete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drop-down in the Rule box.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17764 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/prodassignment-720x413.png\" alt=\"product assignment feature in orocommerce\" width=\"720\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/prodassignment-720x413.png 720w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/prodassignment-360x207.png 360w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/prodassignment.png 758w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you select a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and then add a product property<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featured <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the dropdown list, you will filter only the products where this property is true. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17760 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/featuredprop.png\" alt=\"features drop down - price calculation in OroCommerce\" width=\"442\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/featuredprop.png 442w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/featuredprop-298x210.png 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can build even more advanced expressions on top of the product properties, use operators, numeric, boolean, and string values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to keep your base price list up to date. If prices are not on the price list, the product won\u2019t be returned in the filtering results. Neither will it be displayed or calculated in the price list. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In the Price Calculation Rules section, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">click the<\/span><b> +Add<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> button apply a <\/span><b>price calculation rule. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide the required amount in the <\/span><b>Price for quantity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field. In the dropdown list to the right, select a unit of measure. Your price list will only list prices in this unit. Select a currency in the next drop-down field (only currencies previously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/doc\/orocommerce\/current\/configuration-guide\/pricing\/#pricing-configuration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">configured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the system will be displayed here). Prices are calculated based on the currency assigned in the calculation rules. For example, if you need a product in USD but the item price is specified in EUR, this product won\u2019t be listed or calculated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17763 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/pricecalcrules2-436x440.png\" alt=\"price calculation rules in orocommerce\" width=\"436\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/pricecalcrules2-436x440.png 436w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/pricecalcrules2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/pricecalcrules2-455x460.png 455w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/pricecalcrules2-208x210.png 208w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/pricecalcrules2.png 487w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>Calculate As<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box, enter the calculations manually or use the drop-down <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/doc\/orocommerce\/current\/user-guide\/pricing\/pricelist\/autocomplete\/#user-guide-pricing-price-list-auto-autocomplete\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autocomplete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> option. The <\/span><b>Conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box is used to create conditions based on the prices listed in the new price list. For example, you can create an expression to display and change price calculation only for items under a certain value. In the<\/span><b> Priority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field, indicate the priority of your price calculation rule. The priority indicates the order for the price calculations to be applied (e.g., priority 1 is the highest one). \u00a0By clicking the <\/span><b>+Add<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> button, you can append as many rules as needed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can change the price list using the <\/span><b>Calculate As<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box and some very simple math operations. For example, if you add <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*1 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the formula, you\u2019ll e multiply the price by 1, which is the current value or 100% of the price from the chosen price list. Multiplying a value by 1 returns the same price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17761\" src=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/formula1.png\" alt=\"price calculation formula 1\" width=\"473\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/formula1.png 473w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/formula1-360x59.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you want to increase the price for an item by 10%. Enter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*1.1 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>Calculate As<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to indicate a 100% price plus additional 10%. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17762\" src=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/formula2.png\" alt=\"price calculation formula 2 - orocommerce\" width=\"473\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/formula2.png 473w, https:\/\/oroinc.com\/b2b-ecommerce\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/formula2-360x59.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can enter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*1.2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1.2 = 100% of the price + 20%) to include an extra 20% markup. If you need to reduce the base price by 10%, follow this formula: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*0.9 = 90% <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the price.
