Getting Extend Fields/Entities into Development

I’ve searched for, but haven’t found, great documentation on how to manage getting fields and entities created via the UI in a production environment into dev/staging environments.

So far I’ve been copying the production database and importing into the various environments but this seems like a bit much. Is there a better workflow? Perhaps periodically running oro:migration:dump and creating a migration to “normalize” the environments?
