Conversational Commerce

Buying and selling conducted through natural-language interfaces such as chat, voice, or messaging, where the AI answers questions, checks availability, and completes or assists a transaction within the conversation itself.

What It Is

Conversational commerce is more than a search bar with a better interface. The AI participates as an active party in the exchange, asking clarifying questions, surfacing options, and handling objections, rather than returning a static results list.

It’s the interface layer: the conversation is where the buyer expresses intent, but whether the AI can autonomously complete a transaction depends on whether it’s paired with an agentic checkout.

The buyer experience shifts from ‘search, filter, click, add to cart’ to simply asking for what they need in plain language.

In B2B Commerce Context

In B2B commerce, a large share of buyer questions are things a person could answer in seconds if asked directly: is this in stock, what’s my price, can I reorder the same thing. That makes conversational interfaces a natural fit.

This is close to how OroCommerce’s AI SmartAgent works today: a buyer messages, ‘do you still carry the same fittings we ordered last month, and can you match the price?’ and SmartAgent checks order history, confirms the SKU, applies the account’s contract pricing, and can draft the reorder directly from the chat, respecting the same back-office rules and permissions the buyer would see on the storefront.

This reduces the volume of routine order questions that otherwise land on support or sales teams.

When You Need It

  • Buyers frequently prefer asking a direct question over navigating a catalog.
  • You see high volumes of 'is this in stock' or 'what's my price' questions.
  • You want to lower friction specifically for repeat or known-item purchases.
  • Your support team is fielding order questions that could reasonably be self-served.

Start with your highest-frequency question types before expanding conversational scope.

What It Is Not

  • Conversational commerce is not the same as a rule-based chatbot with scripted responses to fixed inputs.
  • It is not an agentic checkout by itself. Conversational commerce is the interface; whether the agent autonomously completes the transaction depends on what it's connected to.
  • It is not simply customer support chat that happens to sit on a commerce site, it's specifically oriented toward completing or assisting a purchase.
